Routine Guide
Scalp Tool & Routine Guide
How to pick the right tool for your hair and your routine: match the tool to your hair type and length, follow a routine order, and care for the tool afterward. All guidance below comes from our guides and the product specifications on each product page.
Step 1 — Start with your routine
Before choosing a tool, name the routine it has to fit: everyday washing, massage, targeted application, drying, overnight wear, or storage. The routine decides what matters most. A massager fits washing and massage; an applicator bottle fits targeted application; a towel or wrap fits drying; a bonnet or pillowcase fits overnight.
Step 2 — Match the tool to your hair type and length
Fine hair, medium hair, and thick or coarse hair ask for different things from a tool, and so does short hair versus long hair. In general: finer hair needs a lighter touch; thicker or longer hair needs a bigger head, wider teeth, or more coverage to get through a section in a reasonable number of passes. The scalp brush guide and the bonnet fit guide explain the trade-offs in full.
| Tool | What to look for | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Massager | Bristle type, head size, manual or electric | Everyday washing, massage |
| Brush | Bristle type, cushion, tooth width | Detangling, blow-drying, smoothing |
| Exfoliating tool | Nub texture, head shape, handle | Working product through, clearing buildup |
| Applicator bottle | Nozzle type, capacity, comb teeth | Targeted application at the roots |
| Bonnet / sleep cap | Fit, drawstring, fabric | Overnight wear |
| Towel / wrap | Fabric, size, closure | Drying after washing |
Figures and recommendations are planning guidance from our guides and the product specifications, which are labeled proposed until verified with the supplier. Treat them as guidance, not guarantees.
Step 3 — Follow a routine order
Cleanse, massage, apply, dry, overnight — in that order. Cleanse with a massager or brush; massage in slow, even passes; apply with an applicator bottle where needed; dry gently with a towel or wrap; sleep on a silk-look pillowcase or under a bonnet. The applicator bottle guide and the hair towel guide give the full method for their steps.
Step 4 — Clean and store the tool
Rinse silicone and plastic tools with warm water and mild soap, then let them dry fully before storing. For electric tools, unplug first and wipe the outside with a soft, dry cloth — never submerge them. Wood tools should be wiped, not soaked. See the scalp tool cleaning guide for tool-by-tool notes.
